We'll try to answer the most frequently asked questions about our Services. If your question is not listed here, please feel free to contact us. How do I get started with Genie Imaging? You can either order online through our website here and pay with your credit card or if you are a regular high client and spend 400.00 per month, then you can apply to open an account by filling in our account application form. We can accept orders for payment on collection either by e-mail or via FTP (more details) or in person. Finally, you can download one of our pre-made forms and post your order in with pre-payment via cheque or credit card. Our laboratory is open from 0800 - 2000 Monday to Friday File Preparation Guidelines? When you send us in your files or use our online software, please do not resize your files. Just send them as they are, but saved in sRGB. We will color correct and resize your files as needed. What file size will give me the best prints? Digital Cameras resolve their images in pixels. These pixels are NOT measured per inch, but are a total of the amount of pixels required to capture your image. If you take a digital photo at 1600x1000 pixels, the total pixel count of the captured image will be 1,600,000 pixels. Regardless, whether you print this 1600x1000 image as a 8"x6" photo or an 16"x24" photo, it will still have 1,600,000 pixels. If you intend your photos for print set your capture device to its highest resolution setting. In this way you will be capturing the maximum pixels and this will be reflected in the sharpness and colour gradients in your photo. Print Size Minimum Image Resolution
*File sizes are full image sizes not compressed jpeg size. In other words your jpeg size will be smaller than the file sizes listed above. To view and display the file sizes listed above, open the jpeg in an image application such as Photoshop to check the Image Size. What color space should my files be saved in? Files must be saved in sRGB color space. If they are saved with any other colour space embedded, unexpected printing results may occur. What is an image histogram? A histogram is a tool that measures the exposure values in your image. Having a correctly exposed image is the key to successful printing outcomes. A histogram is measured in values of 0 and 255 where 0 is pure black and 255 is pure white. We suggest this website for further information: http://graphicssoft.about.com/od/glossary/l/blhistogram.htm What Printers do you use? We print all photos on an Agfa Dlab 2 which is a laser driven imaging device onto Fuji Crystal Archive paper at 400dpi up to A3. All larger sizes of output are printed using an Epson 9600 Ultrachrome ink process for a highly saturated and archivally permanent print on photo gloss or satin paper. Why do you have different service levels? Realistically, there are two service levels which are priced differently. Low cost printing prices will apply when we do NOT have to open or look at any of the files that you send us. These prices are typically available on our online ordering site and assume that you have adjusted your images for optimum colour balance and density. Value added print prices apply when we are custom digital printing or hand printing. Here a skilled technician opens your files in photoshop and assesses them for optimum colour and density inside our closed colour loop where our printing is very carefully controlled. We accept your imput on these files and will if necessary reprint them until you are satisfied that you have the correct image rendered onto photo paper. |
